The ride from Phoenix to the New Mexico border (almost) ... climbing up the Mogollon Rim ... this will be the steepest climb so far. As you can see, I must climb 16,000 feet and decend 11,000 feet ... 4900 meters climbing, 3500 meters decending .... looking forward to this very beautiful southwest desert ride.

I'm enjoying following you on your trek out here. You're going through some of the same places that Cathy & I just visited but at such a slower place that you must be experiencing so much more beauty than we were able to. We're looking forward to your arrival here!

Your map shows you riding right past the VLA. If you like, let us know when you'll be there and Jim will be happy to give you the insider's personal tour.

There are many varieties of brilliant desert flowers.

America has almost everything available in stores today. It's a very different world from 12 years ago.
19:00
I prefer home cooked grits and corn bread.
19:01
Life zone camping and biking goes from extreme heat to frosty cold with rain and snow.

Here is the chart.

Amazing developed rest stop where I spent the night alone. Closed to the public and shutdown, without graffiti. At major highway intersection.

Purpose of shutdown? Unknown.
19:01
The rest area was a tourism information center.
19:01
Lovely desert flowers.

Saguaro cactus of the lower Sonoran desert.

I've seen more lost license plates in Arizona than anywhere in the world.

Landscape changes as elevation rises.
19:06
Wildlife changes ... the living world of nature changes completely.
19:06
In a single day of riding you enter a completely different world ... different threats, different strategies.
19:06
From Phoenix to 7500 feet ... the Mogollon Rim is a massive geological feature.
19:07
Would you like to camp in bear country?
19:07
A fence that large wildlife cannot jump over. The remains of the seasonal snows.
19:07
Never cease to find stolen goods, wallets and bank cards on the sides of American highways.
19:08
Let's see if we can join ... I wonder about how many camps they have and where.

I've seen them around before. They're group campsites I nice remote locations.
19:08
Common site on desert highways ... dried bones and hides.
19:08
Several communities in Arizona are noise sensitive. I don't think they do well with enforcement.

I lived in Socorro from 1981 until 1985 and attended New Mexico Tech studying geological science.

I will look into scholarship programs for Cambodian youth to attend New Mexico Tech.

My sister Margaret and husband Jim are willing to host two Cambodian youths at their nearby home if we can put together a scholarship program.

We could also work possibilities with Toursanak, cultural exchange or work exchange programs.

If you view the map geo-coordinates using satellite overlay, you can view the precise home where I stay.

We're considering hosting Cambodian youth here.

Some of you have met my sister Margaret. This track of land is her and her husband Jim's home.

Margaret is and experienced school teacher and both have multiple talents ... a great place and opportunity for youths to learn and grow if we can put together a scholarship program.
