I saw many road kill turtles on the road as I entered Wichita.

If one ate turtles, they would not go hungry here.

Signs of homeless everywhere as one enters the heart of the city.

It's actually a very nice, calm, peaceful and well managed city ... great place to raise children, I suppose.
09:25
As everywhere, the homeless have addiction and mental health issues.

This is a baseball dugout, for those who know little about baseball.

They are very common and can be found in communities across America.

They are often found to be a great place to take refuge during a storm or to spend the night.

Look for them always when free camping and crossing America by bicycle.
13:40
Here is a general idea of what people must pay for food and drinks at a typical 2020 American small community baseball game.

Hamburger, chips and a drink for 5 dollars.

Snapshot in time.
13:40
Rules of the trail ... thus far, I believe this Katy Trail may be the highlight of this cross country American journey.

Already I am seeing it as a social experience and a great way to meet people.

It is a well developed tourist attraction, and now is just the very beginning of the season.
13:40
There are great, informative billboard graphics everywhere. I am at the west terminus now.

I slept in the Clinton area last night, behind the community center.

American states are composed of counties, and each county has a town, city or village called the county seat.

The county seat is where the sheriff and the main court house is located.

This is also where legal documents are recorded and stored.

The county seat is also often the center for the annual county fair, and there will often always be a county fairgrounds in the area.

Such fairgrounds are often good places to free camp.
13:40
Last night, I found this site for camping, which was behind the community center in Clinton.

The men's room was unlocked, very large and clean, and there was power and hot water.

A severe storm was in progress and one could not have found a better place to stay.

Another cyclist had already occupied the bathroom before I arrived, but I found a tent outside to be best.

Slept on the front porch of an abandoned farm house right along the trail.

The home is fast deteriorating but all locked up tight. There are several out buildings. Very quiet with no neighbors or roads nearby.

In most other places in the world, this home would have been broken into, stripped of everything and left open.

The place is probably for sale.

Upon reaching the Missouri River, I've found many sections of the Katy Trail to be flooded with no alternative route.

The flooding continues to worsen as the rains continue. Water is flowing down from Nebraska to the Mississippi River valley along the Missouri River valley causing flooding, road closings and power outages.

Right now I am in Columbia, Missouri, safe and dry in an abandoned McMansion.

At this point, when sunshine does return, I may need to alter my route away from the Katy Trail and take US route 40 to Pittsburgh.

Just located and explored an abandoned McMansion south of Columbia.

Most fixtures are intact, very little damage, still salvageable.

I'm sure there are thousands more across the state.

Probably a bank holding. Best thing that could happen is for someone capable to step in and save the place from further destruction.

This place is huge, and fairly modern, but has a dis- functional design. There's even an outdoor underground swimming pool.

An incredible auto salvage yard. 180 acres of land, including 45 acres of autos. 9000 autos.

I spoke long and deep with the owner. Eddie is 67 and recently had a knee operation. He's been at the salvage business for 45 years. He wants to convert to an online sales operation, so I left him my contact information.

Another divorce with kids, with quick evacuation, leaving much good food behind in the kitchen. A very horrible place and ugly situation.

I'm beginning to understand the bigger problem of what is happening in America today through examining not only their general refuse, but the aftermath of suspended family lifestyles.

Not a great place to sleep or hang out, but I was sheltered from a rain storm.

I'm thankful for my life and outlook.

River is very high. Greatest flooding since 1993, I have heard.

You can see the Saint Louis skyline here, and the Gateway Arch if you look closely.

Just above this point is where the Mississippi River and the Missouri Rivers meet.

That is some sort of pumping station.

Do not use Slime ...

I have been walking my bike for half of yesterday and now today to buy a new tube.

Slime tubes cannot be patched, and destroy existing patches.

I was unprepared, I made an error in judgement, and now I must workout my walking muscles.

Add a backache to that, but I'm smiling through it all.
