When an individual offers time and energy to a community without the expectation of immediate payment, they are making a deposit into the social trust bank. This is often framed as "charity," but sociologically, it is an investment. Ultimately, engaging with the gift economy is a political act. It is a declaration that value can be generated and distributed without the mediation of the dollar.
